Antillogorgia americana is a sea fan coral (order Alcyonacea, family Gorgoniidae) found in shallow Caribbean reef environments, forming broad, flat, fan-shaped structures oriented perpendicular to prevailing currents to maximize prey capture efficiency. The species is a common component of Caribbean gorgonian communities and hosts photosymbiotic Symbiodiniaceae in its tissues. Gorgonian corals are important structural components of tropical reef ecosystems and are increasingly studied for their pharmaceutical potential, including anti-inflammatory compounds. Genomic data have been generated for this species and are available in public databases, enabling comparative studies of cnidarian evolution and ecology.
