
Acropora hyacinthus is a dominant table coral across the Indo-Pacific, forming broad, flat plate-like colonies spanning several meters on shallow reef crests that provide critical three-dimensional reef structure and habitat. It is one of the most ecologically important Acropora species, contributing substantially to reef accretion and carbonate production. The species was included in a comprehensive multi-species Acropora genome sequencing project enabling comparative analyses of hybridization, symbiosis gene families, and adaptation. Notably susceptible to bleaching and crown-of-thorns starfish predation, it is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
