Alvinactis idsseensis sp. nov. is a newly described vent sea anemone in the family Actiniidae that flourishes in a variety of extreme deep-sea environments, particularly dominating the peripheral zones of sulfide-rich hydrothermal vents. Unlike shallow-water counterparts, this deep-sea species relies entirely on capturing chemosynthetic bacteria or specialized vent fauna—such as blind shrimp—for nutrition, rather than relying on photosymbiosis or chemoautotrophic carbon production from endosymbionts. While its precise phylogenetic position within the family Actiniidae remains a subject of ongoing molecular investigation, high-quality genomic data have been successfully generated for this species and are available in public databases. These genomic resources provide a crucial foundation for comparative studies on metazoan adaptation to toxic heavy metals, high hydrostatic pressure, and cnidarian evolution.
