
Acropora millepora is a model organism for coral biology, widely used in studies of bleaching physiology, gene expression, and host-symbiont interactions, with well-studied populations on the Great Barrier Reef. It was among the first Acropora to have its genome fully sequenced and annotated (2019), revealing extensive gene families associated with immunity, calcification, and thermal stress response. The species exhibits differential bleaching susceptibility among genotypes, making it central to identifying genetic determinants of thermal tolerance. It is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
