About Actinia tenebrosa

Actinia tenebrosa, the waratah anemone, is a brightly colored sea anemone endemic to the intertidal rocky shores of southern Australia and New Zealand, forming dense aggregations on wave-exposed platforms at the mid to high intertidal zone. It is ovo-viviparous, brooding its young internally and releasing juvenile anemones rather than broadcasting gametes. Its genome was sequenced and published in 2019, enabling studies of its potent actinoporin toxins and the genetic basis of thermal and osmotic stress tolerance. Actinia tenebrosa is widely used as a model for intertidal ecophysiology and venom research.
