
Chrysaora quinquecirrha, the Atlantic sea nettle (family Pelagiidae), is a bloom-forming scyphozoan jellyfish found along the Atlantic coast of North America from New England to the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. It is a dominant summer jellyfish in the Chesapeake Bay, where dense blooms exert substantial predatory pressure on fish larvae and zooplankton and interfere with coastal recreation. The species has a benthic polyp stage that overwinters on hard substrates, producing medusae by strobilation in spring. A genome has been sequenced and deposited for C. Its sting causes moderate to severe skin irritation.
