Chrysogorgia sp. JL179-B06 is an undescribed deep-sea gorgonian coral (family Chrysogorgiidae, order Alcyonacea) collected from bathyal environments in the western Pacific, belonging to a group characterized by distinctive golden to iridescent metallic coloration of the proteinaceous axis at depths of hundreds to thousands of meters. These slow-growing, long-lived corals form important structural habitats in deep-sea ecosystems supporting diverse associated fauna. Deep-sea gorgonians are threatened by bottom trawling and climate-related changes in deep ocean chemistry. Genomic data have been generated for this species and are available in public databases, enabling comparative studies of cnidarian evolution and ecology.
