Corynactis viridis, the jewel anemone (order Corallimorpharia, family Corallimorphidae), is found in dense, colorful aggregations on rocky substrates in the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. Despite its anemone-like appearance, it lacks a calcified skeleton but is phylogenetically closer to scleractinians than to true anemones. Its striking colors ranging from red to orange, green, purple, and white result from host-encoded pigments and fluorescent proteins rather than photosymbionts. It reproduces primarily asexually through clonal splitting, forming extensive single-clone carpets on rocky walls.
