Enteromyxum leei is a myxozoan parasite (family Enteromyxidae) causing enteromyxosis in farmed marine fish, particularly gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and other sparid fishes in Mediterranean aquaculture. The parasite infects the intestinal epithelium, causing severe anorexia, weight loss, and high mortality in affected fish, representing a major economic problem for European aquaculture. It was among the first myxozoans to have its genome sequenced, allowing characterization of its highly reduced gene content and the loss of many metabolic pathways typical of free-living animals, while confirming phylogenetic affiliation with Cnidaria.
