Eunicea clavigera is a branching gorgonian coral (family Plexauridae, order Alcyonacea) commonly found on Caribbean reef crests and fore-reefs, forming dichotomously branching, club-tipped fans or bushes that are important structural components of Caribbean coral reef communities providing habitat for juvenile fish, invertebrates, and epibionts. Caribbean plexaurid gorgonians including Eunicea are rich sources of bioactive terpenoids and have been extensively studied in marine natural products chemistry. Genomic data have been generated for this species and are available in public databases, enabling comparative studies of cnidarian evolution and ecology.
