Kudoa iwatai is a myxozoan parasite (family Kudoidae) infecting the muscle tissue of a wide range of marine fish species, causing kudosis characterized by post-mortem liquefaction of the flesh, a serious problem for fish quality in aquaculture and commercial fisheries. The parasite produces distinctive star-shaped spores in heavily infected muscle, which release proteolytic enzymes following the death of the host fish. Its genome was sequenced and published (2017), providing one of the early complete myxozoan genomes and enabling comparative analysis of myxozoan metabolic pathway loss. Kudoa species are among the most economically important myxozoan parasites of commercial marine fish globally.
