Metridium farcimen, the giant plumose anemone, is a large sea anemone (family Metridiidae) found on rocky subtidal and pier habitats of the northeastern Pacific coast of North America, capable of growing to over 1 m in column height with hundreds of delicate, plumose tentacles arranged around the oral disc for filter feeding on phytoplankton and small particles. The species reproduces asexually by pedal laceration, forming clonal aggregations around parent individuals. Metridium farcimen is an important suspension feeder and is studied as a model for large-bodied, long-lived actiniarian sea anemone biology. Genomic data have been generated for this species and are available in public databases, enabling comparative studies of cnidarian evolution and ecology.
