
Nanomia septata is a colonial siphonophore hydrozoan (family Agalmatidae) closely related to N. Like other physonect siphonophores, its colonies consist of a pneumatophore (gas float) at the apex and a nectosome of swimming zooids (nectophores) that propel the colony through jet propulsion, followed by a siphosome of feeding and reproductive polyps. The extreme division of labor among zooids in siphonophores makes them important models for understanding the evolution of individuality. Genomic data have been generated for this species and are available in public databases, enabling comparative studies of cnidarian evolution and ecology.
