Paramuricea clavata is a Mediterranean gorgonian coral (family Plexauridae) forming large, fan-shaped or dichotomously branching colonies on rocky substrates from 15 to over 100 m depth across the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the key habitat-forming species of Mediterranean coralligenous communities and has suffered catastrophic mass mortality events during anomalously warm summers, particularly in 1999 and 2003. It is listed as Endangered by the IUCN. Genomic data have been generated for this species and are available in public databases, enabling comparative studies of cnidarian evolution and ecology.
