Porites divaricata is a branching scleractinian coral (family Poritidae) found in shallow Caribbean reef and lagoonal environments, forming colonies of thin, widely diverging branches characteristic of this species. It is a common component of Caribbean seagrass beds and lagoonal reef communities and tolerates turbid, low-flow conditions better than most other branching corals. Its tolerance of marginal reef conditions makes it an interesting model for studying coral adaptation to environmental stress and degraded habitat quality. Genomic data have been generated for this species and are available in public databases, enabling comparative studies of cnidarian evolution and ecology.
