Paramuricea biscaya is a deep-water gorgonian coral (family Plexauridae) found in the Gulf of Mexico, one of the species severely impacted by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, with populations showing tissue damage, mucus production, and colony mortality at sites near the wellhead. This event generated significant research interest in the biology and resilience of cold-water gorgonian corals and their sensitivity to hydrocarbon contamination. It inhabits depths of 1000–2200 m on hard substrates in the Gulf of Mexico. Genomic data have been generated for this species and are available in public databases, enabling comparative studies of cnidarian evolution and ecology.
