
Platygyra daedalea, the maze or daedal brain coral (family Merulinidae), is a massive, brain-like scleractinian coral distributed widely across the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to the central Pacific, forming large dome-shaped or encrusting colonies with characteristic meandering ridge-and-valley patterns named for the mythological labyrinth-builder Daedalus. The species is an important reef-builder across the Indo-Pacific and maintains photosymbiosis with Symbiodiniaceae. Genomic data have been generated for this species and are available in public databases, enabling comparative studies of cnidarian evolution and ecology.
