About Umimayanthus nakama

Umimayanthus nakama is a zoantharian (family Hydrozoanthidae) described from Okinawan waters, its species name 'nakama' meaning 'friend' or 'companion' in Japanese and Okinawan dialect, reflecting its commensal association with hydroid hosts. Like other members of the genus, it grows epizoically on hydroid colonies in tropical Indo-Pacific marine environments. Its inclusion in multi-species genomic datasets advances understanding of the cnidarian-cnidarian epizoic associations unique to this zoantharian family.
