Carnegie-2017 is an undescribed soft coral (order Alcyonacea, family Xeniidae) assigned a provisional specimen identifier from a Carnegie Institution collection, representing a potentially new species within the genus Xenia. Xeniid soft corals are distinctive for their characteristic pulsing behavior—rhythmic contractions of the polyps that are thought to enhance photosynthesis by circulating water and improving gas exchange around the Symbiodiniaceae-laden tissues. The genus Xenia is popular in reef aquaria due to its dynamic movement.
